Share the Gift of Learning: Our Annual Giving Campaign Needs You

Since its debut in 2004, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at San Diego State University has grown from 16 students to nearly 750 members — adults age 50+ who share a love of learning and discovery. Over the years, we’ve hosted hundreds of lectures, courses, workshops, book clubs, special events, and off-campus Edventures for our students.

Our Challenge

The $1 million endowment we received in 2015 distributes $50,000 toward our program each year and covers about 17% of our expenses. The endowment was intended as seed money to help us grow and ultimately become financially self-sufficient. Our membership and tuition fees cover an additional 50%. SDSU Global Campus has been generously covering the gap, but we need to become self-sufficient. To attain that goal, we’re continually growing membership and reducing expenses while maintaining the excellent quality of our programming.

The following numbers are for the 2019-2020 fiscal year:

Osher Expense Breakdown

Osher Expenses Breakdown

Program Planning and Delivery: 11%
Instructor Salaries and Benefits: 22%
Professional Staff Salaries and Benefits: 47%
Operating Expenses (Classroom Space, Registration, Cashiering): 16%
Campus Support: 4%

Osher Revenue Breakdown

Tuition and Membership Fees: 50%
Endowment: 17%
Partnerships (Paradise Village and Travel): 4%
Donations: 29% ($82,245)

In order to keep our courses affordable while also expanding our program offerings, we rely on fundraising to account for around 30% of our total yearly budget. This year, our goal is to raise $82,245 through various fundraising efforts throughout the year.

With your support, we can work towards our goal of becoming financially self-sufficient, while also continuing our efforts to provide affordable, high-quality programming to all our students.
