Work with the nationally recognized, outstanding School of Teacher Education faculty at San Diego State University, and master proven effective assessment and instructional activities for K-12 students or at the community college level:
- Gain a strong foundation in theories of language and literacy.
- Learn specific instructional activities and assessment techniques for diverse students, including English language learners and struggling readers and writers.
SDSU's Reading and Literacy Added Authorization program has been accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing since CCTC inception in 2000. Courses in this program can also be applied to the MA in Reading/Language Arts, and Reading Specialist Credential.

The Reading and Literacy Added Authorization program is intended for teaching professionals who want to expand their ability to implement effective literacy assessment and instruction. A hallmark of the program is its emphasis on supervised clinical work, providing applicable experience in comprehensive literacy assessment and instruction.
A valid teaching credential and a course in methods and materials for teaching reading are required for admittance to the program. Community College instructors are invited to apply and complete the coursework, but are not qualified to receive the Reading and Literacy Added Authorization itself from the CCTC. Applicants need three years of teaching experience and a clear California teaching credential after coursework is completed, in order to apply to the CCTC for the Certificate.
How to Apply
To be admitted to the online only Reading and Literacy Added Authorization program, candidates must meet the university (calstate.edu/apply) and departmental admission requirements (http://go.sdsu.edu/education/admissions/reading-certificate.aspx). They will complete 13 units ($296/unit) of coursework: TE 530, 635, 637, and TE 639. Applicants must submit their applications to the department no later than June 1 for an August start.

TE 530 - Children's/Adolescents' Literature (3 units)
Survey of children's/adolescents' literature and its incorporation into the classroom curriculum.
TE 635 - Assessment of Reading and Language Arts (3 units)
Prerequisites: Valid teaching credential; consent of instructor; and a course in methods and materials for teaching language arts.
Theoretical knowledge and practical skill in assessing reading and language arts using both formal and informal measures.
TE 637 - Instructional Strategies for Reading/Language Arts (4 units)
Prerequisites: Students must pass TE 635 prior to enrolling in this course.
Supervised teaching experience utilizing instructional activities in individual and small group settings.
TE 639 - Literacy and Language (3)
Prerequisite: Teacher Education 930 or 933.
Theories of literacy and methods for developing literacy in language, reading and writing. Instructional methods and assessment techniques for children and adults.
